A crossed cheque – the oblique or vertical lines in the centre form the crossing. Like most modern cheques in the UK, the cheque is pre-crossed as printed by the Bank.

A crossed cheque is a cheque that has been marked specifying an instruction on the way it is to be redeemed. A common instruction is for the cheque to be deposited directly to an account with a bank and not to be immediately cashed by the holder over the bank counter. The format and wording varies between countries, but generally, two parallel lines may be placed either vertically across the cheque or on the top left hand corner of the cheque. By using crossed cheques, cheque writers can effectively protect the instrument from being stolen or cashed by unauthorized persons.[1]

Bank

Cheques can be open (uncrossed) or crossed.

Open cheque[edit]

Cheque

An open cheque is a cheque that is not crossed on the left corner and payable at the counter of the drawee bank on presentation of the cheque.

Crossed cheque[edit]

A crossed cheque is a cheque that is payable only through a collecting banker and not directly at the counter of the bank.

Two parallel transverse lines, with or without any word, are generally drawn on the top left-hand corner of the cheque.

Types of crossing[edit]

General crossing[edit]

A crossed cheque generally is a cheque that only bears two parallel transverse lines, optionally with the words 'and company' or '& Co.' (or any abbreviation of them) on the face of the cheque, between the lines, usually at the top left corner or at any place in the approximate half (in width) of the cheque.[2] In the UK, the crossing is across the cheque by the person who originally wrote the cheque (the drawer), or it can legitimately be added by the person the cheque is payable to (the payee), or even by the bank that the cheque is being paid into.[3]

Generally-crossed cheques can only be paid into a bank account,[4] so that the beneficiary can be traced.[5][citation needed]

A crossed cheque on its own does not affect the negotiability of the instrument.[citation needed]

Account payee[edit]

Adding a crossing to a cheque increases its security in that it cannot be cashed at a bank counter but must be paid into an account in exactly the same name as that which appears on the ‘payee’ line of the cheque (i.e. the person who has received the cheque, who is legally the “payee” and “holder” of the cheque).

Not negotiable[edit]

The words 'not negotiable' can be added to a crossing.

The effect of such a crossing is that it removes the most important characteristic of a negotiable instrument.

Restrictive or special crossings[edit]

Where some customary instruction is written between the two parallel transverse lines (constituting crossing of cheque) that may result in imposing certain restrictions on the collecting or paying banker, it is called restrictive crossing. The example is 'State Bank of India'. In these cases, the respective restrictions mandate to pay the cheque through State Bank of India (acting as collecting banker) only.

Specific bank[edit]

A crossing may have the name of a specific banker added between the lines. A cheque with such a crossing can only be paid into an account at that bank.

The beneficiary bank can add an additional crossing to allow another bank, who are acting as their agent in collecting payment on cheques, to be paid the cheque on their behalf.

Consequence of a bank not complying with the crossing[edit]

A bank's failure to comply with the crossings amounts to a breach of contract with its customer. The bank may not be able to debit the drawer's account and may be liable to the true owner for his loss.

A request letter to bank is required for many a reason. Sometimes one may need a new checkbook, renew or reassign an atm card if lost, change the atm password, or guidance regarding any money transactions. Generally, the letter is written addressing the bank manager by an account holder of the particular bank.

The letter should be formal and brief. The requirements should be mentioned clearly in the letter. The sentences will be simple and short. As this is a crucial letter where someone’s money is involved, it is advisable that the account details should be verified more than once.

In case it is a joint account, the secondary account holder should be also informed or added to the mail chain. Thus the procedure is executed with less hassle.

An account holder is provided a default checkbook while he opens his account for the first time. But in case it is lost or the leaves are all used, the account holder can request a new checkbook. He or she needs to write an application requesting the branch manager. Here is an application of a request for a checkbook.

A bank releases a statement of an account for a month or a whole year. The statement is a record of all the debit and credit transactions in a particular account. An account holder may need this statement for any professional reason, or just to keep himself updated for the activities in his account.

Here’s a letter where an account holder is requesting the Branch Manager for a bank statement of his account.

Dear Sir,

I am Matthew Gary, who has an account in New Jersey West Branch for six years. My account number is 10891089. Till last January my passbook was well updated and I do keep an account of all my transactions.

But after January, I went for a holiday and missed some of my transactions to update, which I need to take into account for my personal records. Thus I will request you to generate a bank account statement of last month's transactions and update my passbook accordingly.

I am sure it will not trouble you much. I will be waiting for your update.

Yours Sincerely,

An ATM Card application is placed due to two reasons. One, the person has issued a new atm card or he lost his previous one and asking for a new card. In case of a lost card, it is always advised to lock the previous card immediately and ask for a renewal. The applicant has to provide all the proofs that support his application.

Hello Matt,

I am holding my account in this branch of Boston Central since March 2014. I was issued my atm card back then, which I found missing for two days. I would first like to request you to lock my present card, as I don’t feel I am going find it out and someone else may use it.
I also ask you for issuing a new card against the same account number. Please check my documents that prove the authenticity of my account, and provide the card as soon as possible.

A loan request can be written for various types of loans. It may be a home loan, a car loan or a mere personal loan. The letter of request should be precise and simple. No informal word should be used and each document should be verified when attaching them will the mail.

Hello Adria Russell,

This is to state that I have an account in this branch for a year and my account number is 33456754. I came to know the policies of the home loan scheme of this Bank. I found it feasible and as suggested by my relationship officer, I may have benefitted from some perks as an account holder as per the bank policies.
I have decided to ask for a home loan as I am thinking to buy a home in three months. I have measured my eligibility as per my earnings and quoted the amount in the attached form. I have attached all the documents including my PAN card, Identity card of my company and proofs of my earnings. I have provided my other ongoing loan details as well. In case any more information is required, you can feel free to give me a call.

If you have any suggestions that may increase the amount of my loan or help in reducing my interest rate, please guide me.

Other than home loans, there is another kind of loan as well. Like car loans or personal loans. In that case, as the amount is normally lower than a home loan, you may not have to provide more detail and it is easier to get the approval. Here’s a sample letter of request for a personal loan.
